A sample PO should not only purchase hardware. It should freeze the minimum engineering boundary needed to judge whether the sample is acceptable, repeatable, and ready for the next program gate.

Buyer Problems It Prevents

  • A team can pay for samples while drawing revision, CTQ dimensions, test scope, and report deliverables remain unclear.
  • The supplier may assume a build-only sample while the buyer expects FAI, CMM, FCT, backlash, thermal, or burn-in evidence.
  • Uncontrolled buyer changes after PO can turn a sample program into a long chain of requotes and undocumented revisions.

Should FAI and CMM be required for first samples?

It depends on the sample purpose. Fit-critical housings, bearing seats, output flanges, shafts, and robot interfaces usually need at least a defined inspection scope. Pure feasibility samples may use a lighter report.

What is the most common sample PO mistake?
